Special Olympics needs help

Special Olympics Wayne County is raising money for its athletes.

A yard sale fund-raiser will be held on Saturday from 7 a.m. until at 2007 E. Elm St.

Donations and volunteers are needed by the nonprofit organization, which provides year-round training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation. The money is used to run local competitions, send athletes to compete at state and regional events, buy equipment, T-shirts and uniforms for athletes, coaches and volunteers.

For more information, call Lori Coates at 738-8505.

Award deadline

Nominations for Wayne County's annual small-business awards are due by Monday.

Official nomination forms are available at the Small Business Center of Wayne Community College, the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce office in Goldsboro, and most banks, as well as on line at www.waynecc.edu/cont_ed/smallbusyear.htm. For more information, call 735-5151, extension 334.

Awards will be presented June 17 for Small Business of the Year, Most Attractive, and Special Recognition.

Safety Saturday

The Arrington, Dudley, Mar Mac and Thoroughfare volunteer fire departments will hold a free "Safety Saturday."

Boat inspections, a bicycle rodeo and child-seat inspections will be conducted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Neuse River Shopping Center on U.S. 117 south. Videos also will be shown, fire equipment will be displayed and fire extinguishers will be given away.

Children also can learn what to do when there is a fire, by touring the Goldsboro Fire Department's safety house.

"We hope residents in these four fire districts will take advantage of these activities," Thoroughfare Fire Chief Delbert Edwards said.
