Teen wounded
A Goldsboro teen-ager was wounded Wednesday night as he was walking in the 900 block of Carver Drive, a Goldsboro police report said.
Alroujan Sentell Smith, 17, of Lincoln Drive was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and admitted, a spokeswoman said. His condition was not immediately available.
Smith told police that he was shot by a black man in a white Toyota at about 10:10 p.m. He could not describe the assailant further.
At the same time, police said, the gunshots also shattered windows in a nearby apartment, rented by Matthew Cobbs, on Carver Drive. Damage was estimated at $400.
Shed fire
A shed behind a home at 602-B E. Holly St. was damaged in what Goldsboro fire officials called a suspicious fire, according to reports.
The resident, Tamara Sue Weimer, discovered Wednesday that she had no hot water and called for a maintenance worker, police said. The worker then found the shed had been burned.
Damage was set at $400 to the shed and $300 to the hot water heater.
Scams attempted
Sheriff Carey Winders today is warning Wayne County residents to be on the lookout for several scams.
Some residents have been called and told that they have won large sums of money. To collect their winnings, the residents then were told that they would have to meet the caller in a large public place and put up a service fee in order to collect their winnings.
"The usual targets of this type of scam," Winders said, "are elderly people who the scam artist hopes to take advantage of."
One person, though, foiled one scheme. She was told that she had won $150,000 but had to put up $750. She told the caller that she was too smart to fall for the trick and reported it to the Sheriff's Office.
"If you hear something that sounds too good to be true," the sheriff said, "then it usually is" not true.
Police car in wreck
A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a collision with a Goldsboro police car at 10:32 p.m. Wednesday at Olivia Lane and Carver Drive, police said. Siobhan Cora Britto, 19, of Waters Circle was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Police said the wreck happened like this:
Officer C.H. Newsome, 35, was answering a call on Carver Drive with the blue lights and siren activated on his patrol car. He started a left turn to Carver Drive, and his cruiser collided with the oncoming, eastbound auto that Ms. Britto was driving. Ms. Britto said she had dropped off a passenger on the side of the street and then started up. No charges were filed.
Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the 2001 Ford patrol car and $1,000 to the 1998 Nissan that Ms. Britto was driving.
In other collisions:
*Two people were injured in a two-car crash at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday at East Ash Street and North Audubon Avenue, police said. Amy Lyn Oswandel, 27, and her passenger, Colby Oswandel, 18 months, both of Westover Road, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Oswandel was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was Marjorie P. Smith, 71, of New Hope Road. Damages were put at $3,500.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at U.S. 13 and Dobbersville Road, the Highway Patrol said. James Shigeo Yoshimi, 38, of Erwin, was charged with failure to reduce speed as a result of the rear-end collision. The other driver was Sandra G. Davis, 37, of Julius Sutton Highway, Mount Olive.
*A motorist from Eureka was injured and damages were estimated at $7,600 at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday at N.C. 111 and Daw Pate Road, the Highway Patrol said. Sandra Lee Starr, 49, of North Church Street was released after emergency-room treatment. Cassandra F. Bishop, 29, of Leavie Drive, Pikeville, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign.
*Two people were injured and both vehicles were demolished at 4:03 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 117 and Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kimberly Dawn Leidy, 21, of Ashworth Drive, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Her passenger, Jessica McCarthy, 14, of Denning Drive, Dudley, were admitted at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Shelton Douglas Southerland, 50, of Billy Price Road, Seven Springs, was charged with a stoplight violation and improper equipment after his brakes failed. Damages were put at $25,000.
Drugs seized
Two people were arrested and about $2,700 worth of drugs and property was seized Wednesday by officers at a home near Seven Springs.
Michelle Renee White and Billy Franklin Thigpen, both of Seven Springs, were charged with four felony and two misdemeanor drug offenses.
White and Thigpen were charged with selling marijuana, possession with intent to sell Alprazolam and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement agents and undercover Dare County sheriff's deputies raided the home in the 4300 block of Outlaw's Bridge Road in Lenoir County.
Guns, property stolen
An estimated $2,570 worth of property was stolen Wednesday from a home in the 700 block of Mount Carmel Church Road, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
The resident, Jesse Paul Hofstetler, reported the theft of two shotguns, a handgun, video-game equipment, a turntable, two leather jackets, head phones, boots, shoes, four records and two rope chains.
The thief had damaged a window to get inside and may have fled through a back door, the report said.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment was stolen after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Hines Drive. The resident, Quenton Battle, estimated the value of the stolen property at $450.
*A .44 caliber revolver, a woman's diamond ring, a man's diamond ring, a gold sapphire ring and a gold watch were stolen from a home in the 200 block of Bunche Drive. The resident, Curtis Cogdell, put a $1,900 value on his property.
*A video game was stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 200 block of Banks Avenue. The resident, D.R. Lance, said the game was worth $189.
