The Goldsboro City Council held a public hearing Monday on a request for a special use permit, which would allow Krispy Kreme Doughnuts to build a new store beside the current building.

"I only have one question, but it's important," said Councilman Chuck Allen. "Will we lose any production of doughnuts?"

Dirk Tayson, the company's representative, assured the council that there would be no loss of doughnut production time.

The new store will be built where Pittman's Italian Ice stand is, on the north side of East Ash Street between Berkeley Boulevard and Spence Avenue.

Tayson wasn't sure what would be done with the existing Krispy Kreme building.

The council is expected to vote on the special use permit at its May 3 meeting.

In other matters Monday the council:

*Held a public hearing to rezone the northeast corner of North William Street and Industry Court from General Business to I-5 General Industry.

The property is occupied by a metal structure, which was most recently used as part of Bedford's Hatchery and T&J Lawnmower Repair. The new use would be for a cabinet shop, that would manufacture wood cabinets at the site.
