Several people injured as school bus, car collide

Several people were injured this morning when a bus carrying students to Goldsboro High School and a car wrecked, with the car slamming into a child-care center.
The school bus and a white Chevrolet Lumina collided in the intersection of East Walnut Street and North Slocumb Street.
Sgt. Mike West with the Goldsboro Police Department did not know what caused the wreck or how many people were injured. All of the students on the bus were taken to the hospital along with the driver of the car and a woman who was on the porch of the nearby Here We Grow Child Care Center, he said.

Olivia Pierce, spokeswoman for Wayne County public schools, said that six Goldsboro High School students and their bus driver were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital as a precaution. She said that none appeared to have serious injuries.
The status of the other patients was not known at press time.
The bus was headed east on Walnut Street, and the car was traveling south on Slocumb Street. The bus ran into a nearby tree after the collision, and the vehicle hit the front of the day-care center. The car then caught on fire, he added. Officials received the call at 7:56 a.m.
West said it appeared that the bystander at the day-care center was not hit by a car, but injured possibly by a brick or other flying debris from the collision.
The Goldsboro Fire Department, Police Department and Wayne County EMS responded.
Slocumb Street was blocked off at Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street. Walnut Street was also blocked off at the intersection.
Officials were still surveying the wreck at 9 this morning.
