Goldsboro Fire Department promotes five

Five members of the Goldsboro Fire Department have been promoted to new positions.
Richard Walker and Ronald Stempien have been promoted to lieutenant, and firefighters David Grice, Ronald Lee and Christopher Sauls have been promoted to fire engineer.
These officers display "a dedication of service with a knowledge and willingness to help reduce losses from fires, fire-related hazards and all other emergencies," Fire Chief Bobby Greenfield said in a news release.
Walker joined the Fire Department on May 1, 1985, and Stempien was hired Jan. 17, 1996. Each had been promoted from firefighter to fire engineer.
Greenfield said lieutenants supervise the fire engineers and firefighters on their shift. They also direct and take part in firefighting, conduct training, prepare fire reports and may serve as an acting fire chief.
Lieutenants also must meet and maintain the minimum qualifications and training standards for the position as established by the department.
Grice joined the Fire Department on April 7, 1997. Lee was hired Jan. 20, 1999, and Sauls was hired July 2, 1998.
When called to an emergency, Greenwood said, a fire engineer must drive a fire truck to its destination by the quickest route and pump the required amounts of water on a fire by using the truck's gauges and instruments.
Fire engineers also must possess the knowledge of firefighting techniques, street systems, hydrant locations, major buildings and the physical layout of the city. They must have a thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment.
