Shooting
A 21-year-old Goldsboro man was wounded Sunday as he was walking north in the 900 block of Lincoln Drive near Olivia Lane, a Goldsboro police report said.
Rossano Harris of Lincoln Drive was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, stabilized and then transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was listed in good condition.
Harris told police that a white car, with four occupants, drove up beside him at about 11:58 a.m. and someone started shooting. Harris said he ran away, but fell and realized that he had been shot in the leg, police said. The shooters, identified only as black men in their 20s, then fled north.
Fleeing driver held
A driver from Mount Olive was arrested before dawn today by Goldsboro police and charged with numerous traffic and weapons charges after a brief chase at Seymour Johnson Homes public housing.
Maurice Devon James, 34, of South Center Street fled from officers at speeds of up to 100 mph and then threw a gun on a roof, police said. The gun fell from the roof as James was captured, police said.
James was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He also was charged with two counts of speeding and one count each of reckless driving, driving while his license was revoked, failure to heed blue lights or siren, fictitious registration, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
James was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $43,500 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and their vehicles were demolished in a wreck at 3:50 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 222 and Airport Road, the Highway Patrol said. Richard Brian George, 19, of Watery Branch Church Road, Stantonsburg, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The other driver, Ruby Jean Nethercutt, 57, of Grimesland, was listed today in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. George was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said George had begun a left turn and his pickup collided with Ms. Nethercutt's oncoming, eastbound car. The vehicles were valued at $31,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car collision at 9:25 a.m. Friday at North Park and South Harding drives, Goldsboro police said. One motorist, Briana Michelle Caldwell, 18, of Charles Drive, Fremont, was charged failure to reduce speed as a result of the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Marilou V. Barba of Daniel Drive.
*Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 4 p.m. Friday at North Lionel and East Mulberry streets, police said. One driver, Aloysius Jonte Edwards, 23, of Courtyard Circle, was charged with a yield violation. Police said the southbound car that Edwards was driving collided with an eastbound pickup operated by John Thomas Grant, 56, of East Mulberry Street.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Two women stole 10 pairs of pants, 10 pairs of blue jeans and five NASCAR caps Friday from the Sears store in Berkeley Mall, Goldsboro police said. The women carried bags into the store, put the items in the bags and ran outside to a waiting car, driven by a man. The property was valued at $1,030. One woman was described as black, 5-feet-11 with a slim build and short black hair, and she wore a lime green shirt with white stripes. The other was described as black, 5-feet-3 with a heavy build and short black hair, and she wore a red shirt with white stripes and blue jeans.
*A total of about 1,300 feet of copper cable was stolen between Sunday and dawn today from 13 welding machines at General Industries at 3048 Thoroughfare Road, sheriff's deputies said. The cable was valued at $3,900. A thief also inflicted an estimated $1,000 in damages to a drink machine between Friday and Sunday in order to steal about $10 in change, deputies said.
*A Honda and two Suzuki motorcycles were stolen Sunday from a storage building in the 4000 block of U.S. 13 South, deputies said. The resident, Anthony E. Coley, put a $5,300 value on the Suzukis. The Honda, owned by Randy Eugene Cox of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,500.
*A 2003 extended-cab Dodge Dakota pickup was stolen Saturday from the 300 block of Carla Ann Drive, deputies said. The resident and owner, Ralph Lee Burden, said the truck was worth $19,000.
Drug charge
A 64-year-old man was arrested Sunday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with a felony drug offense in his home.
Preston McKinley Hatcher of Stanley Chapel Church Road, Dudley, was charged with possession of cocaine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 15-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Saturday night to Goldsboro police. Thomasina Nicole Bunch of 1406 Edgerton St. was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 205 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.
When Ms. Bunch was seen last at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, she was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and black and white shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 736-4933.
Corrections
*State Highway Patrol Trooper J.S. Smith said a tractor-trailer that was involved last week in a wreck on N.C. 55 was not passing a car driven by Mount Olive Mayor B.R. Huggins. Smith said the trucker, Victor Padgette of Wallace, had swerved to the left to avoid an oncoming, westbound vehicle that had hydroplaned on the wet road. The westbound driver, Jose Angel Mendoza of Warsaw, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*An article in Sunday's paper incorrectly said that a murder, for which Marcus Dominique Moore was charged, occurred on Saturday. The shooting of Johnathan D. Yarborough was Friday. Moore was arrested on the charge on Saturday.
