Livestock show a success

Youngsters from across Wayne County enjoyed competing against their peers again this year at the 56th Annual Wayne County Junior Livestock Show and Sale.

"Overall I thought we had a very successful show and sale," said Curtis Shivar, president of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association Inc., which sponsored the event along with the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service.

The two-day event was held this week at the Wayne Regional Fairground's livestock arena. Youths brought their goats, hogs and feeder calves in to be weighed on Tuesday morning and then got them ready for the shows on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The shows were followed by an awards presentation and the sale.

Fewer youths participated this year, but the ones who did were pleased with the sale, said Shivar. Many use the money from the sale to place in a fund for college.

He said the plan now is to evaluate what was done and see if there is anything that needs to be improved.

One thing that really helped this year is a group came out before the sale and cleaned up and got everything in place and then helped clean up after the sale, he said. The livestock arena was all clean by lunchtime on Wednesday.
