Farmer's Market to open May 1

No matter what the weather is like, one of the absolute signs of spring in Goldsboro is the opening of the Farmer's Market.
For more than 50 years the market on South Center Street has been a source of fresh fruit, vegetables and homemade goodies.
The Farmer's Market will open Saturday, May 1, with its usual assortment of fresh local produce. Operating hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Colt Holloway carries on a half-century-old tradition by selling at the market.
"Me and my daddy started about 50 years ago," he said. "We used to be at the old Seymour Funeral Home, at the corner of Mulberry and Walnut, under the trees."
Holloway's booth usually offers a variety of home-grown vegetables, including cabbage, peas, tomatoes, beans, okra, cucumbers and squash.
Customers favor the tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and new red potatoes.
"We have people from all over come here," he said. "You'd be surprised."
People visiting family in Goldsboro from places as far away as Florida make their way down to the Holloway booth and the Farmer's Market.
Holloway said that not as many people come to the market as they did when it was at the funeral home.
"We have a lot of old people that come," he said. But a lot of his patrons have died, he added. "We don't have too many young people coming here."
Across the aisle from Holloway is another relative, the Rev. Sara Morgan, who has been selling at the market for over a decade.
Besides a variety of vegetables, the Rev. Morgan also sells homemade preserves at her booth.
