Duplin joins nationwide cleanup

Duplin County is participating in the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup this year, with another amnesty on landfill fees.
The county commissioners have waived the fees for household and yard waste delivered to the county transfer station on April 30, May 1 and 3.
Teresa Quinn, the Duplin Keep America Beautiful coordinator, said this is a great time to haul those bulky items that either the town will not collect or the rural collection centers will not accept.
Also targeted in the cleanup are old tires. Tires are accepted free of charge every day at the transfer station northeast of Rose Hill.
As part of the cleanup, a tire trailer will be placed at the collection center near Lyman on May 1 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Lyman center is at 1353 Jackson Store Road, three miles southeast of Beulaville. Only residents will be allowed at this site; tire dealers will be refused.
Even those who do not have debris to bring in can become involved by helping neighbors or church members clean up their yards by removing old furniture, appliances, limbs and yard debris.
"Many people would haul stuff away," Ms. Quinn said, "if they only had a truck."
