Slocumb Street cleanup progressing

Though there are still some patches of litter on Slocumb Street, the city's efforts to get the road cleaned up are beginning to show.

A few sites show scattered litter, but the trash piled on the side of the road and against a fence is gone.

One parcel of woods still shows patches of litter stretching back through the bare trees, but the city says the property owner is working on getting it cleaned up.

"They asked for an extension, which we gave them," said Joe Sawyer, general services director for the city. "They had people cleaning up all day Friday, and plan to finish cleaning up today."

Sawyer said that the city would hire someone to clean up the area, if the remainder of the trash was not cleaned up today. That charge would be billed back to the property owner.

The unlicensed cars that were spilling into the right-of-way on Slocumb Street have been moved back from the road, and the number of cars has decreased dramatically.

One garage on Slocumb Street has removed all its old junked cars.
