Dr. Keisha Counsela Stevens challenged students at Dillard Academy to set goals and work toward them. She was invited by Mrs. Vivian Stover to speak to the kindergarten through third grade. Dr. Stevens is a Duke University graduate who will complete her internship at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta in June. She is the daughter of Gail Dove Stevens and the granddaughter of Ethel Dove.
A Norwayne Middle School student recently won the district competition for the Rotary Centennial Essay contest. Kylie Justo, daughter of Karla Justo, is an eighth-grader at Norwayne. She placed first in the Fremont Rotary Club-sponsored contest and advanced to the district level. The contest celebrated the Rotary Club's 100th anniversary.
Hannah Jernigan, a student at Wayne Country Day School, attended the Presidential Classroom's National Security in a Democracy program on March 13-20 in Washing-ton, D.C.
The Presidential Classroom provides high school juniors and seniors access to the leaders who shape America's public policy.
Participants are given the opportunity to explore the role government, military and the private sector play in planning and executing defense and homeland security policy. They observe Congress in action and visit sites, such as the White House, the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery.
Additional highlights include tours of the Pentagon and visits to the Federal Bureau of Investigation Training Academy and Manassas National Battlefield in Virginia.
Jeremy Ruesch of Rosewood High School has been accepted to attend the 10th Annual Free Enterprise Leadership Conference sponsored by The Jesse Helms Center. The session will be held at Wingate University.
During the conference, Jeremy will join other high school sophomores, juniors and seniors from across the state for an intense week of learning about the opportunities available through the free enterprise system. They will form "companies" to manufacture products or provide services. Company activities will provide lessons in marketing, production, profit and loss, taxes and the importance of philanthropy.
Jeremy is the son of Gary and Lisa Ruesch.
Karen Naomi Stout, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey P. Stout of Fremont, presented her senior commercial art exhibit at Pensacola Christian College from March 14-16. The senior commercial art exhibit was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the bachelor of science degree in visual arts with commercial art concentration.
Joy Kelly has been selected to attend the Legislator's School for Youth Leadership Development to be held on the campus of East Carolina University in Greenville. She will attend the high school session on June 20-July 3. During the two-week program, students will attend classes and participate in activities designed to enhance leadership skills.
William B. Turner, son of Dr. and Mrs. William Turner of Goldsboro, is on the dean's list for the winter term at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
To qualify, Turner earned a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a 4-point system.
Chelsea Wunders, a student at Norwayne School, has been named a United States National Award Winner in mathematics by the United States Achievement Academy. Her name will appear in the yearbook, which is published nationally.
She is the daughter of Jim and Cindy Wunders of Goldsboro.
