Litter Sweep cleanup to be held Saturday

Less than a week remains before Wayne County residents will be out in force to pick up litter on city and county roads.
The biannual Litter Sweep is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Individuals, corporations and businesses, civic clubs, churches, youth groups and other organizations are now registering to take part.
Litter Sweep volunteers will meet Saturday at the Wayne County Courthouse at 8 a.m. on the Ormond Street side. Safety vests, bags, pickup sticks and latex gloves will be distributed, and transportation will be provided to designated area. Groups also will have the option to pre-register and get supplies earlier.
Everyone will be transported back to the courthouse for a box lunch and a brief closing ceremony at 11:15 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded at the closing ceremony to participants with winning tickets. Several businesses have given a variety of prizes, which include toys and other merchandise.
The Firestone store on Berkeley Boulevard is giving free alignment, valued at $139, and two oil changes. Simonne Cato, director of Keep Wayne County Beautiful, said that Firestone had also agreed to accept used motor oil and automobile batteries from March to May for disposal. The offer is for individual consumers, not for businesses. The company will also accept scrap tires from organized cleanup days during that time.
Ms. Cato said that it was a way Firestone could demonstrate its commitment to sound environmental management and to keeping harmful products out of the environment.
The company is doing it, she said, "as a way to help Keep America Beautiful and to show their support for the Great American Cleanup."
The county commissioners have also declared Saturday as "Amnesty Day" at the county landfill on South Landfill Road. From 8 a.m. to until 4 p.m. that day, the county is waiving the normal tipping fees for all county residents. The offer, however, excludes commercial waste haulers.
This primarily benefits people who want to throw out wood, bricks, limbs, yard waste and construction debris, all of which the landfill typically accepts but with a fee. The landfill already accepts furniture, white goods and tires for free.
The landfill never accepts liquids or hazardous wastes, and Amnesty Day is no exception.
City roads scheduled to be cleaned during Litter Sweep include: North Center Street from Grantham Street to Swan Street; North George Street from Grantham Street to A Street; Central Heights Road from Berkeley Boulevard to New Hope Road; McClain Street from Central Heights Road to Oak Forest Road; Royall Avenue from William Street to Wayne Memorial Drive; Dixie Trail from Slocumb Street to John Street; Slocumb Street from Harris Street to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base gate; Kornegay Street from Chestnut Street to Holly Street; Westbrook Road from Slocumb Street to Arrington Bridge Road, and the Royall Avenue railroad overpass from Frema Motors to Berkeley Boulevard.
