Commissioners ban smoking at County Office Building

The Wayne County commissioners agreed to ban smoking around the entrances to the County Office Building, which is home to the Social Services and Health departments.
"No smoking" signs will now be posted at the entrances on Herman, Lionel and Simmons streets as "non-smoking areas."
A smoking area will be designated next to an out building.
The Health Department was receiving many complaints about cigarette smoke getting in the building, Director James Roosen told the board Tuesday.
Commissioner Andy Anderson wanted to make sure that the area for smokers be covered, which Roosen assured the board that it is.
Other business
Also Tuesday, the county commissioners did the following:
*Called a public hearing for 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, to consider whether to allow car washes on property zoned for "community shopping" or "light industry."
*Met for more than 30 minutes behind closed doors to discuss possible industrial prospects and the county's legal matters.
*Declared April 18-24 as "County Government Week" and April 19-26 as "National Volunteer Week in Wayne County."
*Agreed to support Gateway's application to the N.C. Department of Transportation for Rural Operating Assistance Program funding.
*Received the annual reports of the committees that monitor adult care homes and nursing homes.
