A fourth-grader at Tommy's Road Elementary School remains hospitalized at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after a Monday night accident that claimed his mother's life.

Ryan Goins, 9, of South Harding Drive, was listed in critical condition but has regained consciousness.

Olivia Pierce of the Wayne County public schools said a crisis team was sent to Tommy's Road Elementary on Tuesday to speak with any who required counseling. Several students were allowed to go home early.

The youth's baseball coach also visited Eastern Wayne Elementary School, where several of his teammates attend school, to talk with the students about the situation.

Ms. Pierce said Ryan had no siblings in the school system, and his father lives in Fayetteville.

Ryan's mother, Antonia Venise Proctor, 36, was reportedly traveling west on Pikeville-Princeton Road, failed to stop at the stop sign at N.C. 581 and was struck on the right passenger side by a pickup truck.

Funeral services for Ms. Proctor are scheduled at 9 a.m. on Friday at the Seymour Johnson base chapel.
