Fire damages home
A fire today heavily damaged a one-floor home at 114 Sandy Drive.
Goldsboro police are investigating, a fire official said.
"It looked suspicious," said Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette, who noted that the owner had been away for about a week.
When firefighters arrived, Boyette said, flames were coming from the rear bedroom, where the heaviest damage was seen, he said.
The home, owned by Eva Brody of Durham, was estimated to be worth $70,000, and contents were valued at $12,000, Boyette said. An initial estimate put damage at $35,000 to the brick home and $6,000 to contents, he said.
Three hurt in wreck
Three people were injured in a head-on collision Wednesday on U.S. 117 North, about four-tenths of mile south of Fremont, the Highway Patrol said. A minute later, another driver was injured as two more vehicles tried to avoid the first wreck.
Those injured in the first crash were identified as Jasmine Monique Farmer, 18, of Saddlewood Drive, and Kenna Lachelle Sims, 37, and Dionta Sims, 13, both of Fremont.
State Trooper J.F. Davis explained the collisions like this:
Ms. Farmer was going north at about 6:56 p.m. and the car that she was driving crossed the center line and collided with the sport utility vehicle that Sims was driving. Ms. Farmer was charged with driving left of center.
Then a northbound driver, Rosario Rivera, 36, of N.C. 222 East, Kenly, came upon the wreck. He tried to make a U-turn but the minivan that he was driving was struck by a northbound pickup truck. The truck driver, Ruby Aycock Coker, 71, of Tedder Road, Kenly, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
Ms. Farmer, Kenna Sims, Dionta Sims and Rivera were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. Ms. Farmer was in stable condition, and Rivera has been released, a spokeswoman said. Kenna Sims was transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital, where she was listed today in fair condition.
Traffic accidents
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $26,200 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver from LaGrange was injured at 10:15 a.m. Monday at Ash and North William streets, Goldsboro police said. Phyllis Regina Dawson, 42, of South Wooten Street, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Dawson was charged with driving left of center after her car collided head-on in the center turn lane with a sport utility vehicle driven by Davie Lynn Overman, 25, of Carrboro Road, Fremont. Damages were set at $4,800.
*A motorist from Goldsboro was injured at 5:30 p.m. Monday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Country Day Road, police said. Martineza Best, 21, of East Holly Street was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with reckless driving and fictitious registration after the car ran off the right side, struck a commercial sign and stopped in a ditch.
*A driver of a Waste Industries trash truck was charged with a safe-movement violation after a collision with a sport utility vehicle at 7:15 a.m. Monday on Sandhill Drive near Gainey Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Troopers said Forest Russell Jr., 51, of Aycock Street had started to pass a car that was making a left turn into a driveway. The other motorist was identified as Collette Marie Waters, 30, of Gainey Drive. Damages were estimated at $6,000.
*A car sustained about $5,000 in damages in a hit-and-run collision at 5:20 p.m. Monday at North Spence Avenue and the driveway to Oakbrook Apartments, police said. Dana S. Furgeson, 40, of Kelliwood Drive, was turning into the parking lot as another motorist was leaving. The other driver fled after the collision.
*A Tri-County EMC minivan pulling a trailer was demolished in a wreck at 1:15 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 Alternate near Outlaw Road, the Highway Patrol said. Thomas William Stafford, 55, of Hope Boulevard, Dudley, was charged with driving left of center. The vehicle ran off the left side, came back on the road, ran off the right side and struck a ditch. Damage was estimated at $10,000.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Three gold necklaces, two diamond rings and two video-game systems were stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Kosuda Lane, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Charlene Virgil, estimated the stolen property's value at $2,000.
*A 12-gauge shotgun, a .22 caliber rifle, a television and a portable radio were stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 2700 block of Antioch Road, deputies said. The resident, Durwood J. Smith, estimated the value of his property at $1,030.
*Video-game equipment was stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Pearlie Drive near Dudley, deputies said. The resident, L.S. Owens, estimated the property's value at $400.
*A compact disc player, a small combination television and video cassette recorder and a telephone were stolen after a door was forced open at a home in the 2000 block of Indian Springs Road, deputies said. The resident, Shannon Lee Schneider, put a $400 value on his property.
*Two vehicles in the 100 block of Erik Drive near Dudley were damaged by gunshots, deputies said. The resident, Joseph Bernard Vaughn, estimated damage at $2,000.
*A white Pace trailer was stolen from the parking lot of Horne Storage at 114 Sherman St., Goldsboro police said. A padlock had been cut from the trailer, valued at $2,600.
Man stabbed
A 30-year-old Goldsboro man was stabbed Monday as he walked in a parking lot at Courtyard Apartments, a Goldsboro police report said.
Carlos Council of Courtyard Circle was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He told police that he was walking through a group of people at about 4:30 a.m. and did not know who assaulted him.
Sex, theft charges
A 37-year-old man was arrested Monday by Wayne County sheriff's detectives and charged with a first-degree statutory sex offense and larceny of a vehicle.
Alejandro Pacheco Perez of Selah Church Road, Four Oaks, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $70,000 secured bond.
The detectives, Sgt. Tammy Odom and Chris Bezio, received a report of a sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl. At the same time, a report of a stolen vehicle also was filed. After an investigation, Perez was charged with both felony offenses.
Break-in charges
About six weeks after a break-in was reported at a fast-food restaurant, Goldsboro police arrested a man Monday and charged him with the crime.
Leonard Casco Smith, who did not disclose a home address, was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Smith, 33, was accused of breaking into KFC at 700 E. Ash St. on Feb. 24, Investigator W.P. VanWijk said.
Two charged in scam
Two Goldsboro men picked up a DVD-VCR player Monday night at Wal-Mart and then tried to return it for cash, a Goldsboro police report said. The men were charged with obtaining property by false pretense.
Anthony Cleveland Garrett Jr., 43, of Rachel Drive was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Lonzo Carter, 30, of South Slocumb Street also was charged resisting arrest, and he also was held on an outstanding arrest order. He was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Forgery
A 41-year-old woman was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with four felony offenses. Jo Ann Passerrello of Hazel Street was charged with one count of forgery and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Suspect sought
LUCAMA -- Wilson County authorities are searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting of a Snow Hill man Saturday night outside of a nightclub near Lucama. The victim, J. Cesar Soto, 34, was shot while leaving Gonzalos' Nightclub at 4610 U.S. 301 South.
The suspect was described as Hispanic, about 28-30 years old and 5-feet-6 with a narrow face, a light complexion and black hair in a pony tail. He was wearing green camouflage pants and a white T-shirt. He fled in a white Dodge Ram pickup. Four others were in the truck.
