Crime of the Week
A robbery of two young Goldsboro women near Humphrey Street has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
The women gave the man, whom they knew, a ride. Once inside the car, the man pulled out a handgun and demanded their money. Goldsboro police have charged the man, 19-year-old Ivan Harvey Jr., with armed robbery.
Anyone with information on this armed robbery or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
School vandalized
A thief broke into Spring Creek High School over the weekend, inflicted an estimated $3,100 in damages, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
A school official reported that the fire alarm was activated and contacted Coach Sonny Kilpatrick, who notified authorities, the report said.
Deputies believe that the vandal entered an unlocked utility room, turned off power to the gym, then climbed through a ceiling vent, entered the coaches' office, went to the gymnasium and damaged property. An $8 video tape was also stolen.
Two fire alarm control panels, four security cameras, five windows, a television and a video cassette recorder were damaged, school officials said.
Man robbed
A 36-year-old man was robbed before dawn Sunday of $200 as he walked along Old Grantham Road, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
Johnny Richard Sauls of Woodland Church Road told deputies that a black man got out of a blue Chevrolet at about 12:15 a.m., displayed a firearm and stole his money. The robber got back in the car and went down Woodland Church Road, deputies said.
Sauls could not describe the suspect or the car further.
Teen wounded
A teen-ager was wounded Sunday in a field in the 3500 block of Central Heights Road, a Goldsboro police report said.
Kenneth Mark Pendergraft, 17, of Albertson, told officers that a Hispanic man approached him at about 4:30 p.m. behind a convenience store. Pendergraft said he tried to run away but was shot in the lower left leg, police said. The shooter then fled.
Pendergraft was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Kitchen fire
Unattended cooking was blamed for a kitchen fire Friday that caused about $2,000 in damages to a mobile home and its contents at 111 Ted St. in New Hope, Wayne County fire officials said.
No injuries were reported at the Delma Newsome home.
The fire was out when 10 New Hope firefighters answered the 2:48 p.m. call with one truck. They needed about 30 minutes to ventilate the home. Elroy offered mutual aid.
Eight hurt in wrecks
Eight people were injured and damages were estimated at $24,500 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car collision at 1:10 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 70 and Oak Forest Road, the Highway Patrol said. Diocelina Garcia Tamayo, 33, of Nightingale Lane, LaGrange, and Clarence William Strickland, 87, of South Caswell Street, LaGrange, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Strickland was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision.
*Four people were injured in a two-vehicle collision at 5:43 p.m. Friday on East Ash Street near Lee Street, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Elizabeth W. Biggers, 33, and her passengers, James Biggers, 38, Kevin Wise Jr., 10, and Lewis T. Pate, 6, all of Old Smith Chapel Road, Mount Olive, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Oneida H. Levine, 56, of U.S. 70 East, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. Damages were put at $3,000.
*Damages were set at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 8:22 a.m. Thursday at N.C. 581 and Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. A westbound motorist, Brandy Lee Joyner, 22, of Church of God Road, was charged with a stop-sign violation. The other driver was identified as Kimberly E. Watkins, 41, of Bertie Pierce Road, Pikeville.
*A driver was injured and damages were put at $8,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. Jessie Dawn Wilson, 22, of Comet Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Thomas Dewey Houston, 25, of John Lewis Grady Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Houston was making a left turn, troopers said, and the sport utility vehicle that he was driving collided with Ms. Wilson's northbound car.
*A motorcyclist from Dudley fell off his out-of-control bike and was injured at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on Ditchbank Road near Wood Peck Road, the Highway Patrol said. David Hinojosa, 21, of Robin Lake Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Damage was set at $1,000.
Investigations
Wayne law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Gunfire between Saturday and Sunday damaged a window and a bedroom wall at an apartment in the 900 block of Fairview Circle, Goldsboro police said. The resident, A.F. Payne, estimated damage at $150. No one was hurt, the report said.
*An air-conditioner, a dryer, a couch and love seat, two end tables and two brass lamps were stolen, and walls and molding were damaged between Thursday and dawn today at a rental mobile home in the 100 block of Colonel Warrick Drive near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Betsy Bartlett of Dudley, estimated the stolen property's value at $1,020 and damage at $500.
*A compact disc player and a CD were stolen between Saturday and Sunday after a car window was smashed in the Berkeley Mall parking lot, police said. The owner, Lucas Ray Roper of Goldsboro, estimated his property's value at $160 and damage at $150.
*About $140 was stolen Saturday after a thief pried open a door at a home in the 200 block of East Elm Street, police said. No damage estimate was made at Carl Lee Blackmon's home.
