Police investigate
fire on Holland Drive
A fire that caused about $2,100 in damages Wednesday to a home at 702 Holland Drive has been referred to Goldsboro police for a further investigation.
"It was a set fire," Police Sgt. David Kelly said today. "We collected evidence, sent it off to the SBI crime lab for analysis and are conducting interviews."
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Whaley said a resident had come home and discovered the fire in the one-floor, brick house. Whaley said the fire got into the brick work in the back of the home.
Twenty firefighters answered the 2:55 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
The home, owned by Linwood Sauls, was valued at $148,000, and contents were valued at another $91,000. Damage was estimated at $2,000 to the home and about $100 to contents, Whaley said.
Shed fire
A trash fire spread to grass and then destroyed a storage building Wednesday at 130 Jesse Jackson St., LaGrange, a fire official said.
New Hope Volunteer Fire Chief Bud Gray said the building, owned by the resident, Latonya Summers, was valued at $1,000, and contents were valued at $500.
Ten New Hope volunteers responded to the 1 p.m. alarm with three trucks. Pinewood assisted with two units.
Counterfeit card
A Duplin County man tried to use a fake Social Security card to open a bank account Wednesday and was arrested by Goldsboro police.
Mario Alberto Montes, 30, of William Street, Faison, was accused of going to the RBC Centura Bank branch at 106 N. Spence Ave. and showing the card. A bank employee said the card "didn't look right" and called the Social Security office for verification, police said. The employee was told the number did not match the name, the report said.
Montes then admitted to police that he had paid $30 for the card in California, the report said.
Montes was charged with obtaining property by false pretense, a felony. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
Wreck
A driver was hospitalized after an Air Force pickup truck hit a parked van at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in a parking lot in the 100 block of Miller's Chapel Road, Goldsboro police said.
William Craig Jernigan, 57, of Grantham School Road, Mount Olive, was listed today in stable condition in intensive care at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The driver of the parked rental car was not identified. No charges were filed. Damages were estimated at $1,300.
Trailer stolen
A white cargo, carry-on trailer was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from Tractor Supply Co. at 2901 Cashwell Drive, a Goldsboro police report said. The trailer was valued at $2,682.
Missing sisters
Two sisters -- Tilwonda Tishau Baker, 16, and Britney Latrice Baker, 15, both of 208 Green Valley Drive -- were reported missing Wednesday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Tilwonda Baker was described as black, 5-feet-9 and 130 pounds with brown hair usually in a pony tail and dark brown eyes. Britney Baker was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 135 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. They were seen last at about 9 p.m. Monday. Clothing descriptions were not available.
Anyone with information on the location of either girl was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
