FAISON -- Jean Holmes is resigning as town clerk, and her assistant, Christian Higgins, will be sworn in on April 7 to replace her.

Ms. Holmes is training Ms. Higgins to take over as clerk on March 31.

The town board is looking over about 15 applications for an assistant to Ms. Higgins. The Personnel Committee will meet again before the next town board meeting and is expected to be ready to make a recommendation of whom to hire by then.

Ms. Holmes, who has lived in Faison since she moved there in 1971, replaced former Town Clerk Becky Darden last July. She said she had felt sure when she was hired that she would be able to work at least another 10 or 15 years.

But she said health problems arose unexpectedly in February, and they have affected her energy level.

"I hate to go," she said. "But that little voice inside says, 'You need to take care of yourself.'"
