Big barbecue sale
The Salvation Army is getting ready for its annual barbecue luncheon, an event that has been known to sell as many as 2,000 dinners in two hours.
This year's sale will be Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the headquarters on William Street.
A $6 plate will include a large serving of barbecue, potato salad, cole slaw, hushpuppies, a canned drink and a piece of homemade cake. People will be able to eat in or take out. Drive-through lanes will be set up, and delivery can be arranged for large orders.
The luncheon is one of the Salvation Army's largest fund-raisers.
Advance tickets can be ordered by calling 735-4811 or 778-3629. Tickets can also be bought at the door.
March to Work
The sixth annual "March to Work" job fair will be held 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the National Guard Armory off U.S. 117.
Residents are invited to learn more about employment opportunities. Wayne County residents can arrange transportation through Wayne Uplift at 658-9489.
The job fair is sponsored by the Workforce Development Council, the Wayne County Department of Social Services, WAGES and Wayne Uplift Resource Association.
Abstinence essay contest planned
Wayne County students in grades 9 through 12 are being asked to participate in an essay contest on abstinence.
It is being sponsored by the Wayne County Health Department and the Wayne Council on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention. This is the second year that the essay contest is being been sponsored. Last year more than 60 entries were received.
The purpose of the contest is to have students explain why they think abstinence is the best choice for teens to prevent pregnancy. The top three essay writers will receive Berkeley Mall gift certificates.
To receive an entry form, students should contact their teachers or call the health education division of the Health Department at 731-1236 or 731-1290. An entry form may also be obtained by going on line at www.wchd.net.
Essays and completed entry forms should be mailed to Abstinence Essay Contest, Health Education Division, Wayne County Health Department, 301 N. Herman St., Box CC, Goldsboro, N.C. 27530. The deadline for submitting essays and entry forms is April 23.
Family Fun Day
The sixth annual Family Fun Day will be held April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dillard Middle School.
This is a free community-wide event to make people aware that April as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month.
There will be face painting, arts and crafts, an inflatable slide, information for parents, a story teller, hot dogs, pizza, drinks and door prizes. The Goldsboro High School band will provide music.
