Red Cross auction

The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross made more than $10,000 on it first Heroes Campaign auction. It was held Thursday at Lane Tree Golf Club.
The auction featured a multitude of sports memorabilia and other items. About 220 people attended.
There was a Dale Earnhardt quilt and leather jacket, a Lou Holtz autographed program, a Luol Deng signed floorboard, Billy Beer cans, a Texas A&M jersey, a Mount Olive College basketball signed by the team, a Notre Dame Fighting Irish jersey, an Ohio State Buckeyes jersey, and a Jerry Narron signed bat and ball.
Among the goodies were also baseballs signed by Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson, the Potomac Cannons team, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans team, the University of Central Florida team and Bobby Richardson.
There was even a signed photo of a Clay Aiken album cover, a Medal of Honor portrait of valor signed by North Carolina's four recipients and a live canary.
The speaker for the event was Gene Causby, a former Goldsboro High School football coach and teacher. He spoke about his experiences as an educator and a coach. He also talked about finding one's way in life and how people see things differently because of their experiences.
During the event, three Wayne County "heroes" were honored -- Wes Waller, Billy Lee and George Whitfield.
The auction was part of the second annual Heroes Campaign. Wayne County "heroes" are asked to raise at least $1,000. The money raised will stay in Wayne County and be used for local service programs.
The campaign began March 4 and ends March 31.
"Our first auction was very successful," said Cindy Bell, Red Cross director. "We had a lot of support from everyone."
