The body of a man reported missing March 6 was recovered Wednesday from the Hinson Gravel and Sand pond in the 1200 block of Stevens Mill Road.

The body of David Elmo Shandy was found at about 1:30 p.m. by the sheriff's helicopter Raven that was flying over the pond and nearby woods.

Shandy had been reported missing after a domestic dispute in a nearby home, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said. Witnesses had told sheriff's officers that Shandy had jumped into the water and was seen last swimming halfway across the 35-acre pond.

Members of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office leave a sand and gravel operation off Stevens Mill Road on Wednesday where a body was found in a pond.

Divers on the sheriff's underwater recovery team and search dogs had looked through the pond three times without success. The ArrMac water rescue team from the Arrington and Mar Mac volunteer fire departments also had assisted in the searches.

The helicopter also had searched the area without success.

The body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The lead investigator, Detective Sgt. Tony Morris, is continuing to look into the death.
