Salvation Army gets beds

The Salvation Army recently received a donation that could allow some people in need to sleep more soundly.
Sam Jernigan, president of Jernigan Furniture Inc., gave the Wayne County chapter of the Salvation Army 15 sets of bedding. The gift included mattresses and springs of various sizes, including four king-size sets.
The bedding was valued at $15,000.
The Salvation Army will likely do three things with the donated goods, Capt. John Leidy said.
Some sets will be sold in the thrift store to help generate revenue for other Salvation Army operations.
If the Salvation Army is called out to help people who have lost their home in a fire or other disaster, beds will be available.
And twin beds might be used in its shelter, Leidy said.
Jernigan Furniture has donated items to the county chapter for more than 10 years, Jernigan said.
Jernigan has served on Salvation Army boards in other states and has seen several thrift stores, he said. The Wayne County chapter and store stand out as one of the most professional and best-run organizations, he added.
He encouraged other merchants who have excess stock or simply want to make a charitable contribution to "keep the Salvation Army in your thoughts."
