Annual exposition touts Duplin County's economy

WALLACE -- Hundreds flocked to the second annual Duplin County Business and Merchants Expo this weekend.
Early arrivers found it easier to find a parking space at Wallace's New Duplin Tobacco Warehouse Friday. The exposition started Friday afternoon with a ceremony.
"We're bigger this year, and we hope to keep growing," said Sue Powell, president of Duplin First Council, which holds the event each year to showcase the choices people have in the county for goods and services.
Jo Ann Stroud, a board member of Duplin First Council, said this year's exposition had 123 booths, compared to last year's number, which was around 100.
"We're real proud of the improvement," said Ms. Stroud. "Some of the booths are really beautiful. They've done a good job."
Nine or 10 towns were represented at the ceremony, said Duplin Economic Development Director Woody Brinson. Four county commissioners attended.
"It shows they do support the businesses in Duplin County," he said. "This is all about promoting the economy of Duplin County."
Commissioner Chairman L.S. Guy said it was a great day for Duplin County. He said a business directory, which the Duplin First Council has been working on, will be available soon. It's at the printer now.
This year's exposition had a booth judging contest. The winner was Ducks Unlimited. Second place went to a booth by the Pin Hook Church Ladies.
