GOP convention
The Wayne County Republican Party will hold its annual convention Saturday at the Wayne Center.
Registration will be from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., followed by the organization of precincts from 8:45 to 10 a.m.
The convention, featuring speeches by U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones and other officials and candidates, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Lunch will be provided. The public is invited. There is no charge to attend, but a $10 donation is suggested.

Kornegay to be honored Friday
J. Nelson Kornegay, who retired Dec. 31 after serving 11 years as a Wayne County magistrate, will be honored with a reception at noon Friday in Courtroom No. 1 in the courthouse.
Kornegay has been a fixture in county government since the 1970s. He served six years on the Wayne County Board of Education, including two years as chairman, four years as a county commissioner and eight years on the Wayne Memorial Hospital board of directors.
Pate appointed
N.C. Rep. Louis Pate was named this week to a new legislative committee that will deal with the state's readiness for natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
Richard T. Morgan, co-speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives, chose Pate, of Mount Olive, as one of his appointments to the Joint Select Committee on Emergency Preparedness and Statewide Communication.
Morgan also chose N.C. Rep. Stephen A. LaRoque of Kinston, whose district will include a portion of Wayne County if legislative redistricting maps are approved.
"This committee is so crucial for North Carolina at this time," Morgan said. "With the possibility of natural disaster from hurricanes and also the constant threat of terrorist attacks, we need to formulate a plan to respond efficiently and quickly to any part of the state."
The committee will study establishing first responder communication goals, obtaining federal money to assist communications, and examining ways to improve readiness to handle trauma resulting from disasters.
