Anonymous gift
The Foundation of Wayne Community College has received a gift of $10,000 to its Distinguished Faculty Fund from an anonymous donor.
The money will be used for salary supplements, professional development and travel for faculty.
"That's a very generous gift," said Jack Kannan, the foundation's executive director. "It will help the college continue to offer top-of-the-line instruction to our students by attracting and keeping good teachers."
Kannan said he expects this contribution to be the first of five such donations by the unnamed donor.
The foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships, educational supplies and public cultural events at the college.
Sportsman of the Year
Eugene Price of Wayne County has been named the Sportsman of the Year. The honor is part of the Governor's Conservation Achievement Awards.
Price is editor emeritus of the News-Argus, a columnist and editorial writer. Each Sunday, he keeps readers apprised of wildlife and sporting issues in his column, "Outdoors with Gene Price."
Price is a longtime member of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. He was instrumental in creating the commission's public outreach section. This group of public relations specialists and biologists has broadened the commission's presence and impact.
The award will be presented March 20 during the N.C. Wildlife Federation's 59th annual meeting, to be held in Raleigh.
Duplin exposition
The second annual Duplin County Expo will be held Friday and Saturday at the New Duplin Tobacco Warehouse in Wallace.
The Duplin First Council lined up the businesses, food vendors and entertainment for the event, which will have more than 120 booths and vendors.
The event will begin with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting that includes local leaders of Duplin County. The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with the exposition opening at 6 p.m.
Scholarships available
High school seniors who intend to enroll at Wayne Community College in the fall 2004 semester may apply for Foundation of Wayne Community College scholarships now through March 31.
Application materials have been mailed to guidance counselors in all Wayne County high schools. Students can also contact the foundation office at 735-5151 for information.
The application period for current students returning in the fall is April 1-30. Applications will be available in the foundation office in the Dogwood Building.
Students applying for scholarships are also required to apply for federal financial aid and can do so on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain materials from the college's financial aid office. Contact the foundation or financial aid office at 735-5151 for more information.
