Could this be 'in-sourcing'?
A Goldsboro business got a mention in the Wall Street Journal this week, as an example of a Mexican company that has brought jobs to the United States.
The article Monday spoke of Gruma Corp.'s purchase of Barnes Foods in 1999 and its buying the shell building in the ParkEast Business and Industrial Park.
The article speaks of the problems the county has faced from manufacturing jobs going to Mexico, but also how incentives given by local and state governments are helping to lure Mexican companies across the border.
In the case of Gruma, the company has tripled its Wayne County workforce to 200 employees, far exceeding the number of jobs it had committed to bring in exchange for the incentives it received from county and state government.
Assistance fund established
An account has been set up at Spring Creek Elementary School to help pay medical expenses for Sandra Reynoso, whose family was killed in a car wreck.
Sandra, 12, is a student at Spring Creek, as were her two sisters who died. Sandra is in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Donations are being accepted through the school and will be used to pay hospital bills and to assist with the cost to transport the family's remains to Mexico for burial.
Checks may be made payable to Spring Creek Elementary School and designated for the Reynoso family. The mailing address for the school is 1050 St. John Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C. 27534.
Secretary Day
The annual Administrative Professionals and Secretaries Day Luncheon will be held April 21 at noon at Walnut Creek Country Club.
It is sponsored by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce.
This year's speaker will be Linda Staunch, host of "Around Town" and president of Linda Staunch and Associates. The Southern Wayne High School Jazz Band will perform.
The cost of the luncheon is $15 per person for Chamber members and $20 per person for nonmembers. Reserved seating for groups of four or more is available at an additional charge of $10.
Five Golden Phone Awards will be presented. They are Most Diplomatic, Most Resourceful, Most Patient, Most Budget Conscious and Most Considerate. The 2004 Secretary of the Year will also be named at the luncheon.
Nomination forms are available from the Chamber office and must be turned in no later than April 14. For more information, call the Chamber at 734-2241.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for city employees at the central maintenance center, 1600 Clingman St. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
