Troops deploying
The soldiers from the Charlie Medical Company of the 230th Support Battalion were scheduled to board a plane bound for Iraq this morning at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville.
The North Carolina Army National Guard soldiers are based in Goldsboro along with another unit from the 230th, the Headquarters Company. More than 250 soldiers combined from these two units are being deployed.
The battalion is part of the nearly 5,000 soldiers of the 30th Heavy Separate Brigade, which is headquartered in Clinton. About 3,600 brigade soldiers are headquartered in N.C. armories, while the others come from eight additional states.
GOP convention
The Wayne County Republican Party will hold its annual convention Saturday, March 6, in the Wayne Center.
U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. will be the main speaker, but other elected officials and candidates will also speak.
Registration will be from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. The organization of precincts will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the convention will begin at 10 a.m.
Lunch will be provided. Republicans are urged to attend and support their candidates and party.

Early dismissal
Students will be dismissed early on Tuesday, March 2, so teachers can attend staff development workshops.
Dismissal times will range from 12:15 to 1:35. Questions regarding specific dismissal times for each school should be directed to the child's school.
Also, Wednesday, March 10, is a teacher workday. There will be no school for students.
Grantham school rally
The Grantham School Foundation has announced a date for its public rally to enlist support for a high school in that community.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the Grantham School gymnasium. The county commissioners and members of the Board of Education will also be invited.
Flag retirement
The Wayne American Legion Post 11 will hold a formal American flag retirement and disposal ceremony next month.
It will be on Saturday, March 20, beginning at 3 p.m. at the post home at 2973 U.S. 117 S. It will be open to the public.
