Crime Stoppers helps capture man

The arrest of a man charged in a double murder in Wayne County was made possible because of an anonymous call to Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers.
The tip led to the arrest of Christopher Lee Brown, 20, of Forest Knolls Road on Jan. 2. He was charged with participating in the predawn New Year's Day murders of Michael Shawn Maynard, 30, and Christie Nicole Jones, 25, of Goldsboro in Maynard's mobile home at 176 Garrick Lane.
The tip said Brown was near East Ash Street and North Madison Avenue in Goldsboro. The information was relayed to police, and Capt. J.D. Cogdell and Investigator M.K. Horstmann found Brown. They apprehended him without incident and took him to the Sheriff's Office, where he was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
The caller was to be paid a cash reward for the information.
A second man, Telly T. Cox, 22, of Greg Drive also was charged with first-degree murder in that crime. And a woman also was charged with two counts of being an accessory after the fact of a murder. Alonza Sonye Bedell, 19, of Hunters Creek Drive was arrested later Jan. 2 and jailed in lieu of a $1 million secured bond.
Meanwhile, a man wanted for an attempted first-degree murder in Florida also was arrested by Goldsboro police after a confidential call to Crime Stoppers.
The caller said Willie Frank Boyle Jr., 33, was hiding in a home in the 500 block of East Mulberry Street. Capt. Glenn Barnes confirmed that Boyle was wanted, and he arrested the suspect after a brief standoff.
Sgt. Ed Clay, the police coordinator for Crime Stoppers, told the agency's monthly board meeting that 14 cases were cleared with arrests in January. These also included six drug cases, a break-in, a robbery and the arrest of a second fugitive.
An anonymous caller's information also enabled Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid to find a stolen tractor and charge a Goldsboro man with the theft.
Chasree F. Fuller, 19, of East Chestnut Street was charged with possession of stolen property. The tractor, valued at $2,400, was recovered on South Goldsboro Street in Fremont.
The Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad also reacted to a caller's tip that drug activity was taking place in the 100 block of Park Ridge Road.
Officers arrested the resident, Edgar Jose Garcia, 30, on Jan. 8 and charged him with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping or selling cocaine. They also seized about $1,350 worth of cocaine.
Last year, calls to Crime Stoppers helped officers clear 387 cases with arrests. These included 135 drug cases, 107 break-ins and the arrest of 30 fugitives.
Since Crime Stoppers was formed in 1982, Executive Director Bill Troutman says 6,306 cases have been cleared with arrests after anonymous calls. These include 51 murders, 2,111 drug cases, 1,028 break-ins, 176 robberies and 67 assaults.
Anyone with information on any crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
