Business course offered
for people who speak Spanish
A free business development course is being offered for Wayne County residents who speak Spanish, with child care and transportation also covered. Budding entrepreneurs from surrounding counties can have all costs except travel provided.
Wayne Community College's Continuing Education Division is providing the special 36-hour Rural Entrepreneurship through Action Learning, or REAL, program specifically for the Latino population. Participants plan small businesses and may qualify for $8,000 to $10,000 for starting a business.
Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for six weeks starting in late February or early March. Seating is limited. Call Carlos Cotto or Maria Rigdon at 735-5151, extension 219, for more information and an application.
Thinking Day
Girl Scouts and their leaders will be at the Cliffs of the Neuse picnic area between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday to celebrate their beginnings with "Thinking Day."
Girl Scouts are an offshoot of a European group called Girl Guides, and on Feb. 22 each year the girls and the troop leaders remind themselves they are part of an international program.
That date is the birthday of both Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, who started Girl Scouts. The day is celebrated all over the world, as Girl Guides and Girl Scouts think about, learn about and celebrate their sisters around the world.
Black history celebration
The town of Mount Olive and the Mount Olive Area Historical Society will present the seventh annual Black History Month Celebration.
The celebration will be on Sunday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m. in the Mount Olive Historic Assembly Hall, 207 Wooten St., Mount Olive.
Guest speakers will be Dr. Nicholas King, principal of the Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School; Darryl Woodard, director of the Wayne County Youth Outreach Program; and Nadia Randolf, a student at Southern Wayne High School.
