Perdue to visit
Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue is scheduled to speak next week at the Goldsboro Rotary Club.
The club meets Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Goldsboro Country Club. A buffet lunch costs $5. The public is invited.
Ms. Perdue, of New Bern, served five terms in the state Senate and two terms in the state House of Representatives before being elected lieutenant governor in 2000. She is the chairman of the Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission, which is working on a prescription drug plan.
She also serves on the State Board of Education, the State Board of Community Colleges and the Information Resource Management Commission, North Carolina's leading technology agency. And she has been working to protect the state's military bases in the upcoming base closure study.
Ghana connection
Dillard Alumni Association is sponsoring a banquet in honor of Black History Month on Saturday, Feb. 21, at H.V. Brown Hall on Poplar Street.
"Toward a Better Understanding of Africa: The Ghana and Goldsboro Connection" will be the theme of the event, which starts at 5 p.m.
The featured speaker will be Dr. Joseph "Pete" Silver Sr., who graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1971. He is currently vice president for academic affairs at Savannah State University and will be accompanied by two African exchange students.
Tickets are currently on sale for a $12 donation. Proceeds will go to the building fund at the alumni cultural center.

High school rallies
Two communities vying for high schools will hold public rallies next week to generate comments and support from constituents.
On Tuesday night, Grantham residents will meet in conjunction with the PTA meeting that begins at the school at 6:45 p.m.
The Mount Olive forum will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the former Mount Olive High School.
