Internet fraud
A 21-year-old woman trying to sell her car on the Internet was flimflammed out of $4,800, according to a report from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The Goldsboro woman told deputies that she had corresponded with a man from England about the car. He then sent her a cashier's check and asked her to cash a check for money that he owed another person in Nigeria, deputies said.
When she cashed the check, she sent the money to the man in Nigeria, deputies said. Then later she discovered that a $4,800 hold was put on her account because the check was fraudulent, deputies said.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*An estimated $2,920 worth of property was stolen Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of Mills Loop Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Pagelia D. Hinson, reported the larceny of a shotgun, jewelry, tools, a television and two radio-cassette-compact-disc-player combinations. The thief may have damaged a window and a door to get inside.
*A .25 caliber, semi-automatic pistol was stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a mobile home in the 300 block of Durham Lake Road, deputies said. The resident, L.A. Hunt, put a $130 value on the firearm and set damage at $250.
*An estimated $1,985 worth of property was stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 600 block of Sleepy Creek Road, deputies said. The resident, Carla Johnson, reported the theft of video-game equipment, three leather coats, a coin collection, a necklace and a DVD player. Damages were set at $130.
*A company portable water cooler and a man's radio-compact disc player combination were stolen between Feb. 5 and Monday after a window and a lock were damaged at Laughlin-Sutton Construction Co. at 2165 Memorial Church Road, deputies said. The water cooler was valued at $36, and Timothy W. Mobley of Grimesland put a $90 value on his player. Damages were put at $88.
*Computer software, music compact discs and a CD case were stolen Monday from an unlocked car in the 400 block of Gateway Drive, deputies said. The owner, Andrew Leon LeBlanc of LaGrange, put a $3,090 value on his property.
Nine people injured
in county collisions
Nine people have been injured and damages have been estimated at $56,950 in 11 traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $8,600 in a three-vehicle collision at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Parkway Drive, Goldsboro police said. Harold Devaugn Vick, 23, of West Mulberry Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Another driver, James Everette Godwin, 18, of Saulston Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The third motorist was listed as Donald Lee Gupton, 69, of Ridgecrest Drive.
*A driver from Warsaw was injured and the minivan he was driving was demolished in a wreck at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday on U.S. 117 near Lees Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. Shalone Antonio Carlton, 22, of Community Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. No charges were filed. Troopers said the minivan ran off the right side, struck a road sign, came back across the road out of control and overturned on an embankment. Damages were set at $7,600.
*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 8 a.m. Tuesday in the Southern Wayne High School parking lot, sheriff's deputies said. William Shane Sills, 16, of Deen Street, Mount Olive, told deputies that his foot slipped from the brake to the gas pedal. The pickup that Sills was driving collided with a parked sport utility vehicle driven by Betsy Lee Overman, 17, of Overman Road. No charges were filed.
*A passenger from Goldsboro was injured in a two-car collision at 7 p.m. Monday at North Herman Street and Atlantic Avenue, police said. Catherine Hooks, 51, of Catherine Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and left without treatment, a spokeswoman said. Her driver, April Denise Ruffin, 23, of Antioch Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was listed as Mary W. Garris, 79, of Country Day Road. Damages were put at $150
*Both vehicles were demolished in a crash at 7:05 p.m. Monday on Black Creek Road near Old Black Creek Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Francisco Casillas, 39, of Black Creek Road, Fremont, was charged with driving while impaired and no operator's license after the car he was driving sideswiped an oncoming pickup. The other driver was identified as Jonathan Paul Pate, 18, of Perkins Road. Damages were fixed at $2,700.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 4:10 p.m. Saturday on Cricket Ridge Road near Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Anna Elizabeth Stoppelbein, 17, of Hardwood Drive, Mount Olive, was charged with improper passing. Troopers said the other motorist, Louis Todd Brewer, 34, of Cricket Ridge Road, Mount Olive, had moved to the left to start a wide right turn and Ms. Stoppelbein had tried to pass on the right.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 in a one-car wreck at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Westbrook Dairy Road near Rachel Jackson Road, the Highway Patrol said. The car ran off the right side, careened off the left side out of control and struck a tree, and the driver fled, troopers said. The car was registered to Adolfo Molina Lopez of Four Oaks.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 in a one-truck crash at 4:10 a.m. Friday on U.S. 117 near Lees Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. Michael Wayne Hobbs, 36, of South Ridge Court, Dudley -- the driver for Belle Foods of Mount Olive -- was neither charged nor injured seriously after the truck ran off the right side, came back on the road out of control and turned over.
*A driver was injured in a collision with a tractor-trailer at 9:50 p.m. Feb. 5 at Pecan Road and the driveway to Case Farms, the Highway Patrol said. Lidia Nebi Flores, 35, of Sleepy Creek Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. She also was charged with a safe-movement violation. The trucker for USF Glen Moore Inc. of Carlisle, Pa., was listed as Verne Lee Anderson, 52, of Andrews. Damages were put at $1,900.
*Four people from Dudley were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle wreck at 3:15 p.m. Jan. 5 at Genoa Road and Robin Lake Drive, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Dandrell D'ante Williams, 18, of Alert Cable Road, and two passengers, Dekeivius Williams, 15, and Phillip Williams, 16, and a passenger in the other SUV, Jesse Synger, 14, of Robin Lake Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Abby Dilynn Woodard, 16, of Waldrop Road, Dudley, was charged with a yield violation.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 2:40 p.m. Feb. 2 at U.S. 117 and O'Berry Road, the Highway Patrol said. Norwood Troublefield, 49, of South John Street was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, William Dean Porter, 38, of White Lake, was charged with a yield violation.
Clarification
Chuck Futrelle, manager of Culligan Bottled Water Company in Goldsboro, said a miscommunication between Dayton Meadows of Goldsboro and Culligan resulted in a charge being brought against Meadows for failure to return rental property. Futrelle said the property was returned and the account paid.
