Principals and pancakes

Wayne County public school leaders plan to show off their cooking skills later this month to raise money for a good cause.

The Wayne County Chapter of the Principals and Assistant Principals Association will sponsor a pancake breakfast Feb. 21 to help fund a scholarship for a teacher assistant wanting to further his education.

One option open to instructional assistants under new federal mandates is to pursue a two-year college degree to remain in the classroom. The change in the law prompted many instructional assistants to enroll in community college courses.

"It is our hope that the pancake fund-raiser will help a deserving instructional assistant pay for the additional courses they are required to take," said Debbie Ogburn, coordinator of the fund-raiser and assistant principal of Greenwood Middle School.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, principals and assistant principals will prepare and serve the meals at Andy's Restaurant off Wayne Memorial Drive from 7 to 10 a.m. Meals will cost $5 per plate and will include pancakes, bacon, sausage and a beverage.
