Snow possible
Wet snow mixed with rain is possible in Wayne and surrounding counties overnight and into Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service is predicting just a mix of rain and snow in Wayne with the potential of 2 to 4 inches possible from Wilson County to the north and from the Raleigh area north and west.
Rain mixed with snow is expected to begin here after midnight as temperatures fall to the lower 30s and continue before changing to rain in the late afternoon. Highs Thursday will be in the upper 30s. As much as 1 to 2 inches of wet snow could fall, with most expected to melt on the ground.
People are advised to monitor weather forecasts for any changes.
Pickle awards
The North Carolina Pickle Festival has received two state awards.
Julie Beck, the co-chairman of the festival, and Kim Bowers, the special events chairman, attended the meeting of the N.C. Association of Festivals & Events this week. Ms. Beck was on the awards committee and was named to the association's board of directors.
Mt. Olive Pickle Co. was named Sponsor of the Year, and the festival shirt again won the Best T-shirt Design award.
The pickle company was honored for its major sponsorship and providing free pickles and purchasing student pickle art.
The T-shirt was designed by the art department of Sutton's Sportswear of Billings, Mont. Harold and Susie Sutton are owners of the company. Sutton is a Mount Olive native.
The 2004 festival will be held April 23 and 24. The N.C. Pickle Festival Golf Classic will be held April 22 at the Southern Wayne Country Club. For information, call 658-3113.
Teacher grants
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce plans to give another round of $250 mini-grants to teachers.
For the first time, teachers at private and charter schools will be eligible.
"The mini-grants are an attempt to encourage teachers and support staff to originate and implement innovative projects, by making funds available to them," said Dr. Ken Benton, chairman of the chamber's Education Com-mittee.
Each proposal will be evaluated for its innovative and educational nature, realistic goals, benefit to students, clarity and reasonable budget. Benton said he expects checks to be delivered to teachers during the last week of February.
Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, Feb. 17. For county public school teachers, applications should be sent to the Central Office in care of Donna Grady. Private and charter school teachers should submit their applications to the Chamber of Commerce on William Street.
