Wayne County artists have the chance to show their skills and participate in a T-shirt design contest.
The Waynesborough Historical Village is sponsoring the contest, which is open to all art students and artists in the county. The purpose is to design a T-shirt for the black history expo, which will be at the village on May 1.
The rules are as follows: the participant must be a Wayne County resident; the artwork must be an original drawing reflecting a positive portrayal of the event and it must contain the words: "Black Expo -- A Glimpse of History."
The contest is limited to three designs per artist. And the design is up to the artist with all mediums accepted.
The participant must bring the artwork to the village, and it needs to have on the back the person's name, address, phone number and T-shirt size. Students must include their school and the name of their art teacher.
Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. on April 5, and judges will decide on April 6. The event's planning committee will notify the winner by telephone that day by 5 p.m.
The winner will be presented with a T-shirt of their design and a $50 gift certificate or card to a local art supply store.
Ray Swinson, events chairman of the Old Waynesborough Commission, said that during the expo there will be various displays, exhibits and demonstrations in the village that have a black history theme. The event will be highlighted by a gospel sing featuring around eight different groups.
Anyone wishing to volunteer or participate at any level during the event, including showcasing their artwork or craft, should call Colleen Baker, village administrator, at 731-1653.
All artwork entered in the contest will be displayed in the visitor center through May 15 and will become property of the village.
For more information on the contest, call 731-1653, or write to Goldsboro-Wayne County Visitor Center, Waynesborough Historical Village, 801 U.S. 117 S., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530-5731 or send e-mail to waynesborough@earthlink.net.
The village is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on Monday.
More upcoming events at the village include Summerfest on July 9-11; an open house and barbecue fund-raiser on Oct. 16; "Shadows of Waynesborough" on Oct. 15-16 and 22-23; and Christmas in the Village on Dec. 11.
