Firemen attack blaze

Elroy volunteer firefighters spray water into an open window Wednesday as flames engulf a barn on U.S. 70 East. The barn and several antique cars were destroyed. Elroy Fire Chief Steve Mozingo said the cause of the fire has not been determined by Emergency Service officials. The owner of the barn and cars, David McKnight of Hyacinth Drive, was remodeling an adjacent home, Mozingo said. The barn was valued at $40,000 and the contents at $25,000, the chief said. About 25 Elroy and New Hope firefighters answered the 3:30 p.m. call with eight trucks. They controlled the blaze in about 90 minutes but remained there for four hours, putting out “hot spots” and finishing salvage work.
