Grand jury acts
The Wayne County Grand Jury handed up 48 true bills of indictment on a variety of charges during its February session.
Eleven people were indicted on such property charges as breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. Ten people were indicted on fraud charges, including embezzlement, larceny by an employee and malfeasance.
Nine people were indicted for assault charges and seven for drug offenses. The grand jurors also handed up five true bills on weapons charges, four each for sex and robbery charges and one for child abuse.
Several defendants were indicted for crimes in more than one category.
Four people also were indicted as habitual criminals. If they are convicted as charged of four, non-overlapping crimes, their sentences would be lengthened significantly.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested Wednesday by Wayne County law-enforcement officers and charged with felony drug offenses.
Two people from Selma were arrested by sheriff’s officers and charged with felony and misdemeanor drug offenses near Brogden Middle School.
Lamont Devires Richardson, 28, and Priscilla Sanders Johnson, 25, were charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver 22.4 grams of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 secured bond.
Deputies Randy Thompson with dog Linda, and William Wells arrested the pair during a traffic checkpoint on U.S. 117 Alternate where several break-ins have occurred. They said they found the drugs in the couple’s car.
The third person, Jamar Ray Campbell, who did not disclose a home address, was arrested by Goldsboro police at Olivia Lane and Crawford Street.
Campbell was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver 16.6 grams of marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $11,410 Tuesday in three traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
•A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 3:48 p.m. Tuesday at North William and 11th streets, Goldsboro police said. Mattie Leftdwrige, 19, of Orange Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her driver, Webster Valentino Leach, 19, of Wilson, was charged with an improper turn. The other driver was identified as Gloria C. Raper, 35, of Hinnant Road, Pikeville. Damages were set at $4,400.
•Damages were estimated at $7,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Parkway Drive, police said. David Albert Becker Jr., 23, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., was charged with a safe-movement violation. The other motorist, who was heading south, was identified as Amanda L. Perry, 22, of Lisa Lane.
•A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle collision in which damages totaled $10, police said. Therisa Ruffin, 30, of Kenly was released after emergency-room treatment. She was riding with Anthony M. Shaw, 45, of Kenly. Baxter Lewis Rich, 44, of Annapolis, Md., was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision at 2:30 p.m. on East Ash Street near Herman Street.
Car damaged
A bag of clothes was stolen Tuesday after five windows and the windshield of a sport utility vehicle were smashed in the 100 block of Ivey Court, a Goldsboro police report said.
The driver, Wilfredo Rodriguez of Hyattsville, Md., said his stolen clothes were valued at $100. Damage was estimated at $1,250 to the SUV, owned by DeJesus Claudio Ramirez of Manassas, Va.
Property charge
A 30-year-old woman has been arrested by Wayne County sheriff’s officers and charged with possession of stolen property.
Rita Lea Lee of Crabapple Lane was accused of stealing a 12-foot-by-24-foot barn in Duplin County, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. The barn, valued at $3,000, was returned to its owner. Ms. Lee was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $9,000 secured bond.
