Grantham educator remembered

Hundreds gathered in the Grantham School gymnasium last week to pay tribute to the late Eunice Davis, a Wayne County educator who succumbed to a battle with colon cancer in December.
A ceremony involving students, faculty and staff was held after the girls' basketball game between Grantham and Mount Olive Middle schools.
School board member John P. Grantham and the county's athletic director, Dean Sauls, presented Ms. Davis' family with a plaque in her memory. A softball bat and plaque will be displayed in the school's trophy case in memory of the late coach.
Grantham Principal Wendy Hooks said Ms. Davis was always dedicated and passionate about her work.
"She was a loyal teacher and dedicated to students," she said. "She always tried to figure out how to work and not how to get out of working."
Ms. Davis started teaching and coaching at Grantham School in 1987.
She remained a member of the staff until June 2002 when she retired due to health problems.
She grew up in the Dobbersville community and attended Southern Wayne High School, Mount Olive College and East Carolina University, where she earned a degree in physical education.
