Community meetings have been scheduled at Grantham and Mount Olive to promote efforts to build high schools in the two communities.

Residents of Grantham who support the proposal were asked to attend a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Grantham Fire Department.

A new date was set for a community forum on a new high school for Mount Olive. The forum was postponed last week because of the ice storm.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mount Olive Historic Assembly Hall, which once served as the auditorium for Mount Olive High School.

The event will be sponsored by the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce and the Mount Olive High School Steering Committee.

Mount Olive Mayor Pro Tem Paul Smalley will preside. Members of the steering committee, as well as members of the Wayne County Board of Education, will make remarks. A portion of the meeting will also be set aside for questions from the audience.

Lynn Williams, a member of the steering committee, said, "We need the community's input in this issue. It truly is one of the most important issues for this community in a long, long time. Having a K-12 environment back in the Mount Olive community is an opportunity we just can't ignore."

Members of the Mount Olive High School Steering Committee will again attend the school board meeting tonight, as well as the regular meeting of the Mount Olive Town Board of Commissioners. The group is seeking an endorsement from the commissioners.
