Three students nominated to Naval Academy

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. REP. Walter B. Jones has nominated three Wayne County high school students to military academies.
Rosewood High School senior Joshua Allen and Jerome Frederick Jr. of Southern Wayne High School were nominated to both the United States Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy. Charles B. Aycock High School senior Kaitlin Thomas was nominated to the Air Force Academy.
Allen is the son of Andy and Jeannie Allen and lives in Goldsboro. A National Honor Roll student, Joshua also plays on the baseball and football teams. He was selected as captain for the 2003 football year.
Jerome, is the son of Jerome and Hattie Frederick. While at Southern Wayne, he has served as captain of the tennis team, member of Junior ROTC, and a National Honor Society inductee.
Kaitlin is the daughter of Mark and Janet Thomas. While at Charles B. Aycock, she lettered in softball and cross-country.
The U.S. Air Force Academy is one of five service academies established by the federal government for the purpose of training officers of the Armed Forces. Selection to academies can be extremely competitive, as each academy pays for appointees' tuition, fees, boarding and provides a monthly stipend.

Every applicant, except those to the Coast Guard Academy, must receive a congressional nomination and apply directly to the academy. Typically those receiving nominations and appointments to the U.S. service academies must exhibit strength in character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation.
