Road works
The N.C. Department of Transportation has agreed to add turn lanes at the intersection of Charlie Braswell and Rosewood roads, which is intended to improve safety for Rosewood Elementary School.
The project is scheduled for construction sometime between this July and June 2005.
The county commissioners and school board had asked the DOT to address safety concerns at Rosewood Elementary and other schools, particularly during opening and closing times.
The state has also scheduled improvements for intersections at Spring Creek High School this spring and at Eastern Wayne Middle School next year.
Battle re-enactment
The sights and sounds of a Civil War battle will fill Waynesborough Historical Village this weekend as about 200 participants re-create the Battle of Goldsborough Bridge.
The re-enactors will arrive on Friday evening to set up, and the camps will be open to the public on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entire village will be used to show costumed interpreters creating a living history of camp conditions during the war, with field artillery and drill demonstrations.
Randy Sauls, a Goldsboro native and historian, will tell about the battle in the visitor's center one hour before each re-enactment. The battles are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The event is free and open to the public.

Chamber meeting rescheduled
The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce has rescheduled its annual meeting for Wednesday, Feb. 18, at noon at Walnut Creek Country Club.
The meeting is to recognize the chamber's outstanding members and turn over the gavel to its new chairman.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Lowe's Home Improvement Store. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
Crop workshops
The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service has scheduled its annual workshops for corn, cotton, wheat, soybean and tobacco for Feb. 5 and 17.
Bob Pleasants, extension agent, said both workshops will offer farmers opportunities to learn, meet other farmers, earn pesticide credits and win a door prize.
The Feb. 5 meeting will cover several topics on corn, wheat, soybean and tobacco. It begins at 5 p.m. in the Wayne Center and offers two hours of recertification credit.
The Feb. 17 workshop will stress variety selection, weed management, growth regulation and marketing for cotton. It will be in room 105 in the Wayne Center and will begin at 5:45 p.m. Those attending receive one hour of recertification credit.
Participants arriving on time will have a chance to win one of several door prizes, such as soybean seed and herbicides. Also, each session features a sponsored meal for those who call in advance to pre-register.
To pre-register for the Feb. 5 workshop, call 731-1521 by Feb. 4. Those wishing to attend the cotton session should call the same number by Feb. 16. The center is at 208 W. Chestnut St. in Goldsboro.
