MOC students win scholarships

MOUNT OLIVE -- Five Mount Olive College students have received a $3,000 scholarship from Smart Start to earn a degree to help young children become prepared for school.
The Smart Start Scholarship Program is funded by the Wayne County Partnership for Children and a donation from an anonymous donor.
The students who were awarded the Smart Start scholarships are Cristy Barnes of Dudley, Sandra Gaines of Goldsboro, Donna Grady of Goldsboro, Shannan Lee of Goldsboro, and Veronica Lopez of Dudley.
These students are in the college's Early Childhood Education Program, which is designed to prepare students to work with children from infancy through kindergarten in various learning environments. These include child-care centers, More at Four classrooms, pre-kindergarten and Head Start classes.
The scholarships were awarded based on need with the stipulation that the recipients be employed in a Wayne County licensed child-care facility or related field and be juniors entering the Early Childhood Education Program at Mount Olive College. Priority is given to Wayne County residents, Smart Start officials say.
