Calling area restaurants with the highest sanitation grades the "valedictorians" for 2003, Ben King of the Health Department applauded winners of the Golden "A" awards on Tuesday night.

There were ties in two categories this year, bringing the number of top recipients to six. Slotzsky's Deli again captured the high honor in the restaurant category, tied with Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course Grill. Both received scores of 99.75 percent.

Under food stands, Winn-Dixie Fisherman's Wharf on North Berkeley Boulevard remained in the top spot, tied with its counterpart on Wayne Memorial Drive. Each received a score of 99.5 percent.

Spring Creek Elementary School was named top school lunchroom, with a score of 99.63 percent.

And in the meat market category, Food Lion on N.C. 111 South had the highest average with 99.88 percent.

A new category was also added this year for rest homes and nursing homes, called the institution food category.

Certificates were handed out to 156 food establishments during the annual celebration at the Wayne Center, an increase of over 132 recipients last year.

James Roosen, health director, was the featured speaker. He said he was impressed with the number of restaurants that earned the award.

"Thirty-two percent of our restaurants have had scores of 92 percent or higher on four consecutive inspections," he said. "That says a lot about your commitment to excellence."

Dr. Terry Frazier, chairman of the Board of Health, also noted the value of the Golden "A" program. He said it is not only low-cost but has improved results in the food service industry and instilled pride in the recipients.

"To earn an A, I think the same thing holds true as in school," he said. "People who score this have paid attention to detail; it's the little details that count."

Once again, 100 percent of the Wayne County public schools received the award. Dr. Steven Taylor, superintendent of schools, said that became the goal several years ago.

"Three years ago, we missed it by one," he said. "Last year all 29 schools received the Golden A and did again this year."

He said the school system serves more than 5,000 breakfasts and 14,000 lunches each day.

The Golden "A" awards represent excellence in the area of food sanitation performance, said Worth Heath of the environmental health department. This is the sixth year for the program in Wayne County.
