Sheriff promotes two officers

Two more veteran officers, each with about 20 years of service, have been promoted by Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders.
William Arthur "Buddy" King was promoted to the rank of captain and will be in charge of the civil division, succeeding Owen Jackson, who retired Dec. 1. Allan Sauls also was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in the civil division.
King and Sauls said they will continue to support the sheriff, and Sauls added: "I appreciate the sheriff's confidence in me in promoting me to the rank of lieutenant."
King was hired in December 1983 by former Sheriff James Sasser as a patrol deputy. He was promoted to shift sergeant in 1985.
After Winders was elected sheriff, he promoted King in 1998 to first sergeant in the civil division and then in 2002 to lieutenant. He was promoted recently to captain to replace Jackson.
King has successfully completed numerous classes to further his education in law enforcement. The new captain has a son, Joshua.
Sauls was hired on Oct. 2, 1984, as a part-time special deputy, serving court papers. He was named a full-time deputy in 1987 to work in the Federal Building. Later he was transferred to patrol, and he also has worked in transportation, taking inmates and juvenile detainees to prisons across North Carolina. He also has completed several classes on civil process.
Sauls was promoted in 1998 by Winders to corporal, then in 2002 to sergeant and to lieutenant.
The new lieutenant has served 21 years with the Fremont Rescue Squad and has been a member of the Fremont Masonic Lodge for 27 years.
Sauls is the son of the late Willie and Jane Sauls. He and his wife, Patsy, have one daughter, Julie Head, and a granddaughter, Lindsey. His sister, Maidie, lives in Seven Springs.
Earlier, Winders announced the promotions of Capts. L. Ray Smith and Billy Anderson to major, Lt. Joe Allen to captain and Sgts. Dwayne Edwards and Darryl Overton to lieutenant.
