Comedy ensues on Twitter: It's enough to make you laugh and shudder at the same time

It would be funny if it weren't sad.

It's hard not to blame the president for his own misfortune -- if you see it as such -- being on the receiving end of a deluge of laugh-laden tweets made at his expense this week.

Trump's Twitter feud with Sen. Bob Corker, an increasingly verbal critic of the president's since his decision not to run for re-election, led to Corker's creation of the hashtag #Alertthedaycare.

Corker first called the White House an adult day care late last week in a tweet regarding the Trump administration. This week the hashtag took on a life of its own as everyday citizens took to the social media platform to offer their own critiques using the hashtag, now trending.

The first lady is also getting razed a little, being that part of her platform is supposed to be aimed at cyberbullying. Many using the day care hashtag couldn't let the irony pass being that, in their view, the president often uses Twitter to bully and berate his opponents, i.e. Corker, Sen. John McCain, and one-time rival for the presidency, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, among others.

But, in his defense, Trump has had a few jabs of his own that struck the funny bone. One aimed at Corker -- Trump has repeatedly alleged the retiring senator is quitting because he couldn't win re-election without the president's endorsement -- said Corker "couldn't get elected dog catcher" in his home state of Tennessee.

Corker's staff denies seeking Trump's endorsement, in fact they say the president pleaded with Corker to accept his endorsement and run again but the senator refused.

If you have even the slightest sense of humor, there is plenty to chuckle at while scrolling through one Twitter thread or the other, until you pause and put your phone down.

Then it once again sinks in that these are adults, elected officials, a long-tenured senator and the leader of the free world, both of whom appear much more engaged with insulting each other than improving the lot of the nation they ran to serve.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party is desperately trying to move beyond its failed attempts at overturning Obamacare and funding Trump's wall, and the president still has an up(Capitol)hill climb in trying to get meaningful tax reform accomplished.

But, if he can do it, those laughs will become decidedly one-sided, and hopefully all the way to the bank.
