Democrat message: Party on the downside looking for a comeback

Comedian Will Rogers once famously quipped that "I belong to no organized party. I am a Democrat."

Today that joke is more true than at any time in recent memory. With Republicans in control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, there is little Democrats have to smile about these days.

But Democrats took a stand this week to recover from their recent losses by coming out with a new national agenda that they believe will help them recover, at least by the next presidential vote, if not by the midterm elections.

Promising "A Better Deal," for Americans, party leaders plan to appeal to the working class voters that cast their ballots for Donald Trump and other Republican candidates last fall.

The Democratic platform has three major goals: helping workers obtain better skills that will prepare them for the changing job market, lowering living costs for average families, and raising wages.

But they have a big job ahead of them if they hope to convince those Trump voters that they can better deliver on those promises than the Republicans can.
