Big John's road: Part of new bypass named for late state Sen. John Kerr

A five-mile stretch of the new U.S. 70 Bypass will be named the John H. Kerr III Highway, and we are happy to see the honor being paid to our late legislative leader and friend.

Kerr was a big man, and he did things in a big way.

He spent two decades as one of the region's chief advocates in the hallways of the legislature, much of it pushing infrastructure improvements that would help the economy in this part of the state.

We believe the recognition is well-deserved. Kerr was a real public servant, always looking to the future, always working to help his constituents. He was a true mover and shaker in Raleigh, and it is largely through his efforts that the new highway is in place.

The section of roadway being designated for Kerr lies between its intersection with I-795 and U.S. 13. Future motorists will see the signs and perhaps wonder who this fellow Kerr was. We hope the designation helps keep Kerr's name and his legacy from fading.
