Child abuse awareness: April is time to be reminded of suffering that often goes unseen

We are all concerned about the health and safety of our own children, but what about the neglected kids in our society. Who is going to be concerned about their well-being? Who is going to do something to ensure they are safe?

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and the observance will be marked locally today with a ceremony at City Hall.

The fight to end child abuse might seem like an impossible one -- children have been the subject of abuse around the world for centuries -- but the effort must be made. We cannot tolerate the continued abuse that seems to permeate many societies, both rich and poor.

Wayne County's theme for the month is Caring Communities Helping Families Prevent Child Abuse. Pinwheel gardens scattered about area are intended to be a reminder of the need to stamp out child abuse in all its ugly forms.

But the effort cannot be limited just to one month. Every month must be child abuse awareness month. And we all have to do our part to be on the watch for potential child abuse and ready to report suspected cases to the proper authorities. It's simply the right thing to do.
