HB2 deal: Money fears drive bargain between lawmakers, governor

The word out of Raleigh late Wednesday was that Republican legislators and Gov. Roy Cooper have worked out a deal that would repeal and replace the law known as HB2.

The law, passed last year, requires people to use the public restroom of their gender anatomy, not of their gender identity.

It has caused much angst among liberal-minded folk who say it is discriminatory. It also has cost the state a lot of money, according to those same people.

That, unfortunately, is the driving force behind the agreement: money. We have supported HB2 since it was approved because we don't believe men dressed as women should use the same facilities as women and girls.

It is an issue based on common decency, and we don't much like the fact that the fear of losing money is driving the bargain. We would like to see the issue put to rest like everyone else, but we hate to see North Carolina sell out for the dollar.
