Strong delegation: Wayne County is, as usual, one of leaders in Raleigh

As the North Carolina General Assembly begins its work, Wayne County residents can again assume the pride that goes with having a prominent delegation in the lawmaking body.

Wayne has for decades enjoyed a strong hand in Raleigh. Gone are the days when Democrats like Henson Barnes and John Kerr helped set the tone on Jones Street, but the current Republican delegation has made itself a big player in the halls of the legislative building.

With Reps. John Bell and Jimmy Dixon holding positions of leadership in the state House and Sen. Louis Pate doing likewise in the state Senate, Wayne County interests are well represented among the state's 100 counties.

And that is not to forget the Democrats who represent parts of Wayne, Sen. Don Davis and Rep. Larry Bell. Although representatives of the minority party, they too have built solid reputations.

Wayne is well positioned to have a say in any legislation coming down the pike.
