Court pick: President Trump announces nominee for Supreme Court

Well, after nearly a year of waiting, we have a nominee for the Supreme Court who stands a real chance of being appointed.

President Trump named Colorado Judge Neil Gorsuch as his choice to replace the late Antonin Scalia on the high court, and we hope Gorsuch will soon be confirmed and take his seat. The court has for too long gone without a full complement of justices, and it has slowed its important work.

Trump used his experience as a showman to reveal his choice. The media and the people of the country were kept in suspense until the final moment, when Gorsuch was announced.

His appointment will not come easily. He faces much opposition in the Senate despite his qualifications. Republicans stonewalled former President Obama in his choice for the position, Merrick Garland, refusing to even give him a hearing, and you can expect Democrats to put up a fight over Gorsuch.

Let's hope the battle over the post is not too drawn out or acrimonious. We have had plenty of scrapping lately. It would be good for the country if the two parties could come to an agreement for once. Scalia was a conservative voice on the court. It is only right that he be replaced by a similarly conservative justice.
